Accessibility

1. Our commitment

Ascent Onsite Group Ltd wants The Ascent Summit Challenge website to be usable by as many people as reasonably possible, including people who use assistive technology or have visual, hearing, motor, cognitive or other access needs.

We aim to design, build and maintain the site with recognised web-accessibility principles in mind.

Our target is to work towards the relevant WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards.

We do not claim that every part of the website is fully compliant at all times. The site will continue to evolve throughout the campaign, and accessibility forms part of our ongoing design, development and testing process.

2. What you should be able to do

We aim for visitors to be able to:

  • navigate the site using a keyboard;
  • use the site with common screen-reader technology;
  • zoom text and interface content without losing essential information;
  • understand page structure through logical headings;
  • identify links and controls clearly;
  • use forms with visible labels and error information;
  • access meaningful alternatives for important visual content;
  • use the website on different screen sizes and orientations;
  • access core information without relying solely on animation;
  • reduce non-essential motion through device or browser preferences where supported.

3. Visual design and colour

The Summit Challenge uses a strong navy, orange and white campaign identity.

We aim to ensure that important text has sufficient contrast against its background, colour is not the only way information is communicated, active states, progress and errors have non-colour cues where appropriate, text remains readable over photography and video, and overlays or gradients are used where necessary to protect legibility.

5. Motion, video and animation

The Summit website includes cinematic imagery, animated transitions, video and scroll-driven storytelling.

We aim to ensure that motion does not prevent access to core information.

Where appropriate:

  • important information is also available as normal text;
  • video used as atmosphere does not depend on audio to communicate essential information;
  • videos autoplay without sound only where appropriate;
  • reduced-motion preferences are respected;
  • scroll-driven animation is reduced or replaced for people who request reduced motion;
  • flashing or rapidly strobing effects are avoided.

Where a substantive video contains spoken information, we will aim to provide appropriate captions or an equivalent text alternative.

6. Images and graphical content

We use photography, illustrations and campaign graphics throughout the site.

We aim to provide useful alternative text for informative images, use empty alternative text for purely decorative images, avoid embedding important information only inside images, provide equivalent text for important charts, funding explanations or timeline information, and ensure generated or campaign visualisation imagery is not presented as factual documentary evidence where that would be misleading.

7. Forms

Forms such as Register Interest should be designed so that every input has a clear label, required fields are identifiable, instructions are understandable, error messages explain what needs correcting, keyboard users can complete and submit the form, focus moves predictably, and privacy information is available before submission.

If you experience difficulty completing a form, contact us and we will provide a reasonable alternative way to make the enquiry.

8. The Journey scrollytelling experience

The homepage includes a scroll-driven Journey module.

Because complex scroll effects can create accessibility barriers, the implementation should ensure that:

  • the four campaign stages remain available in readable semantic text;
  • users are not required to perform precise scrolling to access essential information;
  • keyboard navigation does not become trapped;
  • reduced-motion users receive a simpler presentation;
  • content remains usable on mobile, tablet and desktop;
  • video within the Expedition stage has an accessible fallback.

9. Documents

Where we publish downloadable documents, we aim to make them accessible where reasonably practicable.

If a document is not accessible to you, contact us and we will try to provide the information in another suitable format.

Where possible, important campaign information should also be available directly as HTML rather than only in a PDF.

10. Third-party services

Some campaign services may be provided by third parties, for example charity fundraising platforms, external booking or expedition services, embedded media, maps, social media or partner websites.

We cannot control every aspect of third-party accessibility.

Where a third-party service is important to participation in the campaign, we will seek to choose appropriate services and provide assistance or an alternative route where reasonably possible.

11. Known limitations

The Summit website is an evolving campaign platform.

New pages, media and interactive components may be added as the campaign moves from planning through recruitment, fundraising, training and expedition stages. We will review new components as they are introduced.

No formal accessibility audit has been completed for this website yet. This section will be updated to list any specific known issues once one has.

12. Feedback and assistance

If you find an accessibility problem, need information in another format, or have difficulty using part of the website, please contact us.

Telephone
0800 058 4830

Please tell us the page or feature you were using, the problem you experienced, and the format or assistance you need where relevant.

We will aim to respond and provide reasonable assistance as promptly as practical.

13. Ongoing review

Accessibility is part of the Summit Challenge's ongoing website QA process.

We intend to review keyboard accessibility, colour contrast, form labels and validation, mobile responsiveness, image alternatives, reduced-motion behaviour, heading structure, interactive components and video/caption requirements.

The statement will be updated when material changes are made or after a formal accessibility review.
