Why AOG Created The Ascent Summit Challenge

The Ascent Summit Challenge was created to turn the principles behind The Ascent Way into something visible, shared and measurable. Every two years, Ascent Onsite Group intends to bring colleagues, clients, partners and selected professionals together around one significant challenge, one chosen cause and one opportunity to create lasting social value. Kilimanjaro 2027 is the founding edition.

The Ascent Summit Challenge is Ascent Onsite Group’s biennial social-value programme, not a one-off campaign. Kilimanjaro 2027 is its founding edition: a team of 20 climbers raising £80,000 for a selected charity.

A challenge with a purpose beyond the mountain

At Ascent Onsite Group, the idea of reaching a summit already runs through how we describe the business. It is about persistence, discipline, accountability and finishing what we start.

The Ascent Summit Challenge takes that principle beyond the workplace.

Rather than creating another internal fundraising event, we wanted to build something that brings together people who normally meet through contracts, projects, supply chains and professional relationships — and gives them a reason to work towards something meaningful together.

Kilimanjaro 2027 is the first expression of that idea.

The plan is to bring together a team of 20 climbers, drawn from AOG, our clients, industry partners and selected professional contacts, to take on Mount Kilimanjaro while raising £80,000 for a selected charity.

But the mountain is only one part of the story.

Why build a permanent Summit Challenge?

The ambition is for The Ascent Summit Challenge to become a biennial AOG social-value programme rather than a one-off expedition.

Every two years, the challenge can change. The cause can change. The people around the table can change.

What stays consistent is the purpose:

  • create measurable community impact;
  • bring businesses and people together;
  • give participants a meaningful development experience;
  • create opportunities for volunteering, fundraising and shared activity;
  • leave behind evidence of impact that can be reported honestly.

Kilimanjaro 2027 is the founding edition, not the end point.

Social value that can be seen and measured

For us, social value should be more than a statement in a tender.

The Summit Challenge is being designed so that its impact can be measured over time. That includes funds raised, charities supported, participating businesses, climbers, training events, volunteering activity, community engagement and the outcomes created for the selected charity.

Why Kilimanjaro?

A founding challenge needed to feel significant enough to bring people together.

At 5,895 metres, Mount Kilimanjaro gives the first Summit Challenge a clear goal, a demanding preparation journey and a shared finish line.

The challenge will require commitment long before the expedition itself: fundraising, UK training, team preparation, kit, fitness, planning and supporting one another through the process.

One team, different reasons for taking part

Not everybody involved in the Summit Challenge needs to climb.

The 2027 campaign is being developed around three routes into the programme:

  • client companies that nominate or support a participant;
  • individual professionals taking part in a personal capacity;
  • campaign partners supporting through funding, matched giving, training, kit, facilities or other practical support.

What happens next

The campaign is currently in planning and partner invitations.

AOG is progressing the charity-selection process, participant conversations, expedition planning and the wider partner programme. As each part is confirmed, we will publish the details through the Journey section of the Summit Challenge website.
